The Best AI Tools for Creating Memorable Taglines
February 20, 2025
Do a quick Google search about the use of AI in creating taglines and you’re bound to find hundreds if not thousands of hits from websites claiming to offer this service, often for free.
To save you time, we tested out a few free AI models to see whether they were any good at creating taglines. We were specifically hoping to see whether the AIs would be able to replicate human creativity. The results, as you’re about to see, were varied but promising. Let’s jump in!
Can AI Create Effective Taglines?
The Importance of Great Taglines
Creating an effective tagline for your business is an essential part of communicating with your market. It establishes, at a glance, your Unique Selling Point (USP) and sets you apart from your competition.
Famous taglines like Apple’s “Think Different” and Nike’s “Just Do It” show how compelling a simple catchphrase can be.
Keep it Simple
It’s no wonder that most companies try to emulate these famous brands when creating their own taglines.
However, unless your brand is already well known like Nike and Apple, your best bet for an effective tagline is one that gets to the point and conveys what your company is good at.
The Benefits of AI in Creating Taglines
Taglines that are too out-of-the-box can confuse their audience or even mislead them. The result is disastrous.
An article by The Telegraph describes how AI was able to outperform humans when creating tourism taglines that people preferred.
While famous brands probably won’t use AI to rewrite their taglines, Artificial Intelligence can be much better at writing taglines that get the point across, perhaps due to its lack of human creativity.
The value of AI lies in its ability to condense ideas and save its users time. In the past, copywriters might have spent hours, if not days, coming up with a couple of catchy taglines, which they then presented to the rest of the team. A brainstorming session might follow in which the most effective taglines might be picked, worked at, whittled down, and finalized. AI saves some time in by giving us a myriad of taglines in a matter of seconds, helping to kickstart the process and get our creative juices flowing.
AI is a powerful ally for copywriters, marketers, and business owners. It complements human creativity by handling the heavy lifting involved in crafting the perfect tagline. With Natural Language Processing (NLP), it can process requests and generate ideas in seconds to give us a head start. While it’s no substitute for human creativity, it’s an indispensable tool that allows us to work smarter and faster.
AI isn’t foolproof, though. When AI was tasked with rewriting the taglines of 50 well-known brands, the results tended to be very on the nose. “Think Different” became “Innovation at its Core,” and Rolex’s “A Commitment to Excellence” became “A Legacy on your Wrist.” It might be just us, but we prefer the originals.
Our Review of Popular AI Tagline Generators
To keep things fair, we used the same prompt for all the AIs. We asked each of them to create taglines for a freelance writing company. We gave them information about the kind of work our fictional company does, including its services and areas of expertise. Here’s how it went:
ChatGPT

We started with the AI original, the one that, arguably, started the artificial craze. ChatGPT is known for being quite handy with creating content, given quality input. We weren’t disappointed. In fact, we must admit that we were a little impressed.
ChatGPT is free to use, with a paid-for version that allows some extra perks like uploading documents for it to view. The interface is sleek and minimalist, with zero distractions.
We asked it to create a few taglines using our standard input. In a matter of minutes, it spat out six taglines.

Sure, a few could have been better, but, overall, the ideas were good, the quality was fair, and the potential was there. Chat GPT put out something we could build upon. The only bone we have to pick is that it seems ChatGPT is overly fond of using hyphens.
Ahrefs

Ahrefs is almost as familiar to us as ChatGPT. The site offers a number of useful and free marketing tools, including its SEO title creator, backlink checker, and keyword generator.
We tried out its slogan (tagline) generator, which was as straightforward as using ChatGPT. There’s also an option to toggle the writing tone. We changed the setting from Formal to Friendly and received different results, but nothing earth-shatteringly different. It’s nice that it keeps the different versions for us to take a look at, though.

Following each result is an explanation of its focus–a nice touch. We also noticed that the taglines Ahrefs spit out didn’t encompass all our fictional company’s offerings like ChatGPT did.
This is a little bit of a drawback, as it looks like it makes one tagline for each aspect of the business instead of looking at the company as a whole.
Copy.ai

The first time we tried out copy.ai’s free slogan generator, the website gonked out and we had to reload the entire page. We’re glad we kept trying, though, because the results were rather interesting.
There may be a time and a place for a run-of-the-mill tagline, but there are moments when you want something a little bold. A little––different. Copy.ai gave us that.
The taglines were short and sweet and felt utterly unique in comparison to the other AI-generated taglines we looked at. Honestly, we were hard-pressed to pick a favorite.

Our only critique is that these taglines might be a little too creative. What if all we’re looking for is a tagline that says clearly and eloquently what the company does—not that we want to change the world or “master the art of written expression”?
Grammarly

Back before AI became a buzzword and spellcheckers looked at spelling and grammar with no regard to context, Grammarly was (in our humble eyes) quite revolutionary. It allowed users to check their writing in real-time, across any platform, in context. Sure, it’s never been foolproof, but it definitely is handy.
Along comes AI, and of course, Grammarly joined the bandwagon. Creating taglines using Grammarly’s free tagline creator involves inputting information across three different windows.

We’ll admit we were frustrated at not being able to simply paste the same prompt we’d been using throughout this exercise like we’d done with all the other AIs, but the process didn’t take too much time. We also must admit that by breaking up the prompts, the AI probably has a better understanding of what a user needs.
The results were not bad, but like ChatGPT, we saw an overabundance of hyphens employed. We’ll forgive Grammarly since we quite liked a few of the taglines that came out, especially “Words that Work,” which has a rather nice ring to it.
ClickUp

The biggest drawback of using ClickUp’s AI (or “Brain,” as they call it) is that it’s only available after signing up to ClickUp. Good for them, bad for those of us who just want to drop in and quickly use the service and move on. Any kind of signup process takes time, and if time is what you’re trying to save, this is a hassle.
We kept at it, sacrificing our email addresses to see what taglines “Brain” could come up with. Once we were finally able to test out ClickUp’s AI, we found that it takes the form of a chatbot. Not deterred, we gave it our standard prompt. When the results loaded, we were delighted to see that there were no hyphens in sight!

“Crafting Words, Creating Impact: From Ideas to Reality” sounded the best at first glance, maybe because it sounded similar to some others, like Grammarly’s “Your Story, Our Words – Turning Ideas Into Published Reality,” or ChatGPT’s “Your Words, Our Expertise – Turning Ideas Into Impactful Content.”
Are AI Tagline Generators Enough?
There are only so many different iterations of a standard tagline that can be written, and by utilizing AI, you’re bound to get all of them. Is that a good thing? We’re not so sure.

At the start of this experiment, we were convinced that AI’s usefulness lay in its ability to create a bunch of options that we could then take and play around with.
The sheer number of options, though, can lead to “overwhelm” and a dwindling ability to quickly judge taglines effectively.
As we saw, AI might save time initially, but it doesn’t take away the necessary thinking that needs to be done. It’s up to us, the humans, to sift through the dregs to find a phrase with great potential and turn it into gold.
