Freelance Writing Jobs Stolen by AI
October 3, 2024
No, you’re not imagining it. If you’re a freelance writer, chances are you will have noticed a marked decrease in job postings over the last few months –– or pretty much since the widespread adoption of ChatGPT.
In this new article we found from the Wall Street Journal, journalist Christopher Mims explores how the advent of AI and specifically programs like ChatGPT have caused the direct and marked decline in job opportunities for writers across the US.
It’s not surprising. Throughout history, new technologies have always made certain skills redundant in the process of replacing jobs. Even the simple dishwashing machine, once upon a time, replaced human hands in doing the work to earn a wage.
The result, as far as we can tell, is that AI will take over those dime-a-dozen jobs that were the staple of many writers and leave opportunities for true creativity and human (emotional) intelligence. Finding these jobs, though, might not be easy––that’s where the challenge comes in.
Time will only tell how the landscape of freelance writing will be permanently changed in the aftermath of AI.
